Turritella Agate, more accurately known as Elimia Agate, is a fossil-bearing form of chalcedony within the Quartz family. The stone is famous for the small spiral fossils embedded throughout its surface, creating intricate natural patterns that resemble tiny shells. Despite the widely used name Turritella Agate, the fossils contained within the stone are not from the marine Turritella genus. Geological research has shown that the fossils are actually from a freshwater snail called Elimia tenera, which belongs to the Pleuroceridae family. The original misidentification occurred decades ago, but by the time the correction became widely known the name “Turritella Agate” had already become firmly established in the gemstone and lapidary trade.
