Peridot, pronounced pair-uh-doe, is the gemstone form of the mineral olivine, a magnesium iron silicate that forms deep within the Earth. The amount of iron present determines its color, which ranges from bright yellow-green and lime to deep olive or brownish-green. Unlike many gemstones that occur in a wide range of colors, Peridot is always some shade of green. Most stones are transparent with excellent clarity and are commonly cut into faceted shapes for jewelry.

While olivine itself is a very common mineral within the Earth, gem-quality Peridot crystals large enough for jewelry are much rarer. Peridot forms deep in the upper mantle and is brought to the surface by volcanic activity, where pieces of mantle rock are carried upward within lava flows.

This unusual formation process has earned Peridot the nickname “the extreme gem,” since it originates far deeper in the Earth than most gemstones. In rare cases, Peridot crystals are also found inside pallasite meteorites, meaning some examples of this stone formed in space billions of years ago before eventually reaching Earth.

Peridot has been valued for thousands of years. Historical mining took place on Zabargad Island in the Red Sea as early as 300 BCE, and the stone has appeared in jewelry across many ancient cultures. Today, important sources include Arizona in the United States, as well as deposits in Pakistan, Myanmar, China, and parts of Africa.

In practical use, Peridot is often associated with personal reflection and steady personal growth. Because of its ability to encourage clarity of thought and focus, it is sometimes referred to as The Study Stone.” Many people keep Peridot nearby when concentrating on learning, research, or tasks that require patience and long-term dedication.

Peridot is also valued for its ability to help release nervous tension and emotional heaviness. It is frequently used during periods of stress, uncertainty, or major life transitions when calm thinking and emotional balance are especially important. By encouraging people to look inward for guidance, the stone supports confidence and independent decision-making.

Peridot is highly beneficial in discharging emotional issues that impact the physical body. Placing it over the Solar Plexus helps relax and release nervous tension, often referred to as "butterflies."

It also alleviates fear, guilt, anxiety, impatience, heaviness of heart, and destructive emotions like jealousy and self-doubt stemming from past relationship betrayals when placed over the Heart Chakra.

Using Peridot can aid in locating lost or misplaced physical items and assist in the quest for spiritual enlightenment and knowledge. Wearing Peridot set in gold promotes peaceful sleep, particularly for those experiencing recurring nightmares related to evil spirits, murders, or sexual attacks.

Peridot can be worn or carried as a talisman to attract luck and ward off personal darkness. It adds charm and eloquence to presentations, evoking positive and helpful responses from usually uncooperative individuals. Additionally, it enhances profitability in trades and serves as a natural protection against envy, gossip, and deception.
Some practitioners also work with Peridot during energy-based practices such as Reiki, where it is believed to help support a steady flow of restorative energy. After activities involving warmth—such as saunas, hot stone therapy, or heat treatments—holding a cool Peridot stone is sometimes used as a way to maintain relaxation and extend the calming effect.
Overall, Peridot is widely appreciated as a stone of clarity, personal responsibility, and steady progress. Its bright olive-green color reflects growth and renewal, making it a meaningful companion for those focused on learning, emotional balance, and long-term personal development.
